Professional and Community Activities

James López is a widely published scholar in the field of Latin American literature and literary translation. In addition, he is the founder and co-director of the Center for José Martí Studies Affiliate at СÓÅÊÓƵampa. The CJMSA’s dedication to the study and teaching of the history of the Cuban émigré communities of the 19th and early-20th century has been recognized with two major grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a Greater Good: Humanities in Academia grant from the Florida Humanities Council. The 2019 and 2023 NEH Summer Institutes The Immigrant Communities of Florida and José Martí in Cuban Independence and the Dawn of the American Century brought 59 scholars and over 20 visiting faculty from throughout the United States for month-long residencies at СÓÅÊÓƵampa to research the fascinating history of these émigré communities and their role in Cuban independence and the Spanish-American War.Ìý

Professor López teaches an array of courses and has led numerous study abroad programs to Cuba and Perú. His work with students abroad earned him the СÓÅÊÓƵampa International Service Award in 2009.Ìý

Honors and Awards

López has received numerous grants in support of his research, and was twice awarded the College of Arts and Letters Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. In 2019, he was awarded the Louise Loy Hunter Award for Outstanding Faculty Member at СÓÅÊÓƵampa.
